About stents

Stents are small (metal) mesh tubes that are implanted into arteries to prevent or treat vessel blockages.

Coronary stents (which are typically balloon-expandable CoCr alloy stents) are used as one of the standard treatments in coronary artery disease (such as heart attacks). Several million stents are implanted each year.
